Stockton Town are back on their travels as they make their first-ever trip to Warrington Town.

The Anchors bounced back from their dismal home defeat to Ilkeston Town with a penalty shootout triumph over Hebburn Town in the Durham Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

Josh Scott’s opener, coupled with a red card for Hebburn’s Jack Foalle, looked like it had set the Anchors on their way to a win in normal time, but the Hornets showed spirit to pull themselves level through Robert Briggs.

However, Stockton prevailed thanks to goalkeeper Nathan Harker, who made two crucial saves in the shootout.

Stockton will be without long-term absentee Glen Butterworth as well Josh Baggs and Captain Adam Nicholson who is supsended.

There’s a possible return for Owen Gallacher.

THE OPPOSITION

Warrington Town made their return to the Northern Premier League following their relegation from the National League North last season. The Yellows spent two seasons in the sixth tier after their Play-Off win over Bamber Bridge in 2023.

Paul Carden’s men, who currently sit in 16th, are absolute chalk and cheese when it comes to home and away form. Their home form suggests a side capable of reaching the Play-Offs, evidenced by their last two home games in wins over Lancaster City and Ashton United. In stark contrast, their away form is one of a side at risk of making the dreaded double drop. That was abundantly clear in last Saturday’s 8-0 defeat at Hebburn Town.

There’s plenty of experience still in the squad, especially in midfield, with Captain Jay Harris who boasts EFL experience at Tranmere among others, and Josh Vela who has featured in the Premier League when he broke through at Bolton Wanderers.

PRE-MATCH QUOTES

Looking ahead to the trip, JD Briggs said:

It’s going to be a good trip. They (Warrington Town) came down from the league and they are struggling a little, but I am sure they’ll find their form and feet properly.

“We’d like to continue from tonight (win over Hebburn) and start a little run.”

Michael Dunwell added:

“Another long trip away to Warrington who will be wanting to put right their 8-0 loss to Hebburn last week. They’d been in good form up until that so we won’t be going into the game thinking it’s easy.

“It can happen – off days. We had one last week then played well midweek and won. We just have to find some consistency in games and try and put a run together.”
