Twin brother of Anchors defender Arjun Purewal, Amar was a product of Newcastle United’s academy, spending five years with the Magpies before flourishing during with Newcastle Benfield, Durham City and Bishop Auckland, where both he and Arjun made history after becoming the first twins to score in the same FA Cup game.

After being Durham City’s top scorer, the clinical finisher joined Darlington in 2012, scoring 45 league goals in his first two seasons. He then became the first ‘new era’ Darlington player to reach 50 goals, just beating none other than Stephen Thompson to the historic milestone, before going on to represent Panjab internationally, alongside Arjun, in the ConiFA World Cup in 2016, scoring seven times en route to the final, agonisingly losing to Abkhazia on penalties.

Purewal left the Quakers in 2016 after tallying 61 goals in 115 appearances, and playing a key role in helping them to the National League North, next joining Shildon for a season, before spending three successful years troubling the Anchors at West Auckland Town, where he won a Player of the Season after again being the club’s top scorer in 2018/19.

Following the COVID lockdown, Amar joined Hebburn Town for the 2020/21 season as they looked to compete with the Anchors for the Northern League title, but despite the season being curtailed early, Purewal led the Hornets to FA Vase glory, scoring at Wembley in a win over Arjun Purewal’s Consett.

After Hebburn’s promotion was confirmed alongside the Anchors, Amar helped the Hornets to safety, scoring eight goals along the way. In the 2022/23 season, the forward bagged 18 goals, leading the Tyneside-based team to a third place finish.

It was the 2023/24 season when the now 35-year-old really set the league alight. Whilst captaining the side, he scored 30 goals en route to a title-winning campaign, claiming the golden boot and promotion to the NPL Premier Division, where the Anchors joined through the playoffs. Purewal then scored 18 goals in the 2024/25 campaign, with 17 coming in the league, placing him inside the top 10 of the goalscorers standings.

Amar now brings his experience and skill to the Anchors after 82 goals in 178 appearances on Tyneside, and will now be playing club football alongside his brother for the first time since the duo were at Darlington together in 2012.
