INTERVIEW | Chuka Unigwe post Workington

Chuka Unigwe provided his reaction to Stockton Town’s 1-0 win over Workington.

Chuka was a second-half substitute, making his league debut for the Anchors after impressing for the last couple of seasons in the U18’s side.

When reviewing the matchup, Chuka said:

“It was a hard game. The conditions on the pitch weren’t the best for us, but the most important thing is we came out with the three points in the end.”

The skilful winger made his Anchors senior debut in the FA Trophy against Clitheroe, but now joins a vast number of U18 talents to make their Northern Premier League debut, which he comments on by stating;

“I’ve had to be patient, I’ve had to wait a while for it, but I’ve been working really hard and it means a lot that my work has been noticed.

“The coaches [in the U18 squad] have looked after me extremely well. Paddy [Davis], Joe [Lillie], Mark [Bruce], and Kyran [Foster], who was with us last year, are great at developing players on and off the pitch, as you’ve seen with plenty of us making first team appearances.

“They keep us ready and prepared for that next step of our careers, whatever it may be, and all of the credit needs to go to them.”

Chuka then takes the time to explain his emotions when he was given the call from Michael Dunwell to prepare for his substitution:

“I was a bit surprised to be honest, but I knew I had to keep all of my emotions undercover because I was coming into an important game, with a role of helping the team see out a result.”

After impressing in his short stint on Saturday, Chuka could have the chance in the squad again on Friday, when Hebburn Town visit the MAP Group UK Stadium, and looking ahead to that game, he says:

“We’re confident, the lads are all in good spirits, happy with three clean sheets in a row and obviously it’s up to the gaffer to pick the squad, but either way I’ll be ready for any opportunities and I’ll be keeping my head down to keep pushing forward.”
