Captain Adam Nicholson says he couldn’t ‘ask for much better’ on his return to action after Stockton Town recorded a 2-0 win over Morpeth Town.
The Anchors skipper returned to the fold after missing the first five games of the season from a suspension which rolled over from last season.
It was an ideal start as a Kev Hayes free kick and penalty steered them past their North East rivals Morpeth.
“Delighted to be back out,” Nicholson said.
“Absolutely buzzing with the three points, clean sheet and a 2-0 win. Couldn’t ask for much better to be fair.”
It was a game played in sweltering conditions, and Nicholson admitted it was taxing: “I chose the hottest day of the year to play my first and it was difficult out there. But, it was the same for both teams.”
“You’ve just got to get through it. I think the drinks breaks helped.”
On his return Nicholson was playing alongside two new faces in Jamie Bramwell and goalkeeper Harry Christy, both of whom he was yet to play alongside in a competitive fixture.
“They are two good young lads, so it’s good to be together with them.”
“They are fresh and bring new ideas, and both want to get on the ball.”
“Sometimes it’s just about managing the game and the expectations. I use my experience to help them through the game as much as they help me.”
Attentions now turn to the FA Cup trip to Trafford next Saturday. Nicholson will be without usual partner Tom Coulthard who will serve his suspension.
“It’s another good game, and another long bus journey. It’s a ground we’ve never been to before and a team we’ve never played before, so it’s exciting.
“We’ll go there and look to get through to the next round and see where we end up.”
