Stockton Town host Northern League Division One’s Guisborough Town in their second Pre-Season affair.

The Anchors were narrowly defeated by Newton Aycliffe on Saturday, after Amar Purewal gave the Anchors the lead, Aycliffe turned the game on its head late in the first half.

Stephen Thompson missed an opportunity to level the game late on, but he sent a penalty high over the crossbar.

Purewal was joined alongside new signing Jamie Bramwell in the starting lineup, with Jake Petitjean coming on as a second-half substitute.

There were also a number of U18 teams who featured including Jaedon Faulkener, Luca McHugh and Joe Kennedy. Goalkeeper Tyler Smith played the full 90 minutes.

Vinnie Steels remains in the recovery phase of an ACL injury suffered last season, and will likely miss all of Pre-Season.

THE OPPOSITION

Guisborough Town spent a majority of the 2024/25 season in and around the playoffs, but unfortunately slipped away towards the end of the season, finishing 11th on 62 points in Northern League Division One.

In the off-season, the Priorymen hired former Whitby Town boss Nathan Haslam as their new head coach, surrounding him with Northern League veteran assistants such as Gary Wood and Gary Forster.

Haslam has started his time with some impressive coups, bringing in a number of signing, including Josh MacDonald, formerly of Whitby Town and Marske United, Ben Errington from Shildon, and the return of Joe Ferguson.

Guisborough have also brought in forward Elliott Beddow, who left the Anchors in summer after four years at the club.

PRE-MATCH QUOTES

Looking ahead to this Pre-Season test, Michael Dunwell has said:

“Their season starts quite a bit earlier than us, so they’ve back a few weeks already. I think Michael Sweet, Kev Hayes and Nathan Harker should be available, so there’ll be even more of the first team in action, but we expect another tough test.

“Guisborough will be one of the teams trying to get out of the Northern League this year, and we’ve got to focus on ourselves to get rid of some of the sloppiness we had against Aycliffe, and get back into shape quicker too.”
