Stockton Town Football Club are proud and delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with Teesside University to help support students towards future footballing careers.
The club is linking up with the University to help create a sports pathway, linking football to higher education and beyond.
The aim is to enable students representing the University in the men’s British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Team, managed by colleagues in Teesside University Students’ Union, to work with experienced football coaches in a professional environment.
Coaches from Stockton Town, which currently play in the Northern Premier League East Division, will take charge of the University’s men’s football team at weekly sessions.
Liam Cox, Head Coach at Stockton, who is also a Teesside BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science graduate, has maintained close links with the University as he offers support to students through workshops as part of the sport and exercise science degree.
Liam, who also leads a successful football pathway between Stockton Town FC and Stockton Sixth Form College, said: ““It’s a brilliant opportunity for the club and the university.
“It’s something we’ve been building over the last couple of years. We’ve got a really strong link with the university and the college programme that we have here at the club.
“The university supports us through a few other things throughout the junior section, so this was the next natural development, and something we can really sink our teeth into to make things a little bit more official.
Cox continued: “What’s going to happen, moving forward, is that the football programme delivered by the university will actually be ran through Stockton Town Football Club.
“We’ll have control over the 1’s and 2’s squads, and we’ll deliver the football activity.”
Harriet Dryden, President Activities at Teesside University Students’ Union (TUSU) and BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation graduate, said: “We are delighted to be a partner in this excellent initiative. I am confident it will be hugely beneficial for all parties, with members of the Teesside University Men’s Football teams receiving first-rate coaching.
“They, in turn, can hopefully break into the Stockton Town squad to help the club to even greater success in the future.”
