Mikey Roberts admits Anchors weren’t at their best in Widnes win

Mikey Roberts has admitted Stockton Town’s FA Cup win over Widnes was ‘not one of the best performances’.

Roberts came on for Michael Sweet in the 69th minute and made himself an instant hero by scoring the winning goal with his first touch.

“It probably wasn’t one of our best performances,” Roberts said.

“It was a bit like the Prescot Cables game we spoke about the other week. The lads dug deep in what was a sticky, horrible and hot day.

“It ended up being a route one ball that got us in and we finally got our goal.”

The Anchors laboured throughout the game and created very little until Roberts produced a decisive touch.

Incidentally, like Roberts, Elliott Beddow who provided the assist also made the telling contribution with his first touch of the game.

Their impact off the bench proved the attacking options Stockton have from their bench.

“It just shows when you’ve got four forwards in Sweety (Michael Sweet), Fowler, myself and Beddow you have got a bit of variety in everything.

“Each game is going to be different and the squad is going to be required.”

Focus quickly returns to the league next Saturday when the Anchors welcome Robbie Savage’s Macclesfield to the MAP Group UK Stadium.

It will be a demanding fixture with the Silkmen heavily tipped to take the Northern Premier League Premier Division title at the end of the season.

“They should be tough opposition. It’s a big game and there should be a big crowd,” Roberts remarked.

“Like Guiseley we were arguably the underdogs in that game and if we can perform the same against Macclesfield by going at them and putting them on the back foot. We can cause, from the outside in, people would call an upset.”
