Michael Fowler Speaks Following Blyth Spartans Victory

Following his late heroics off the bench last night, Michael Fowler expressed his delight on the result.

The striker controlled a pass on the edge of the area before unleashing a rocket over the goalkeeper in the 84th minute to secure all three points for the Anchors, and he describes his goal by saying: “I hadn’t really got a shot off all game after coming on in the first-half, I always want to capitalise on the opportunity and I just saw the ball drop, Thommo [Stephen Thompson] was there next to me, but I thought I might as well take the strike and fortunately it’s flew over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.”

Fowler was brought onto the pitch in the first-half following a slight problem with Josh Scott, and he discusses what he’s been doing to keep ready for those moments where he’s needed: “I’d be lying if I said the last few months haven’t been tough mentally. It probably has been the toughest season so far, obviously I am still young, only 23-years-old believe it or not. But it’s been really tough, I’ve had to dig in off the pitch, extra time in the gym and more work as a whole, and just continue to grind and it’s paid off with the goal tonight.”

He follows that by saying how helpful the squad have been in keeping his spirits high: “They’ve been amazing. I’m one of those players who is very emotional, especially with football as it means a lot to me. I’ve had a lot of downs, I’ve had some up’s but not as many as I’d like this season but the lads always keep positive with me and keep pushing me in training, and when moments like that happen it’s fantastic. They all crowd around me and make me feel like a million dollars.”

He closes by looking ahead to Saturday’s home clash with Warrington Rylands and how he can use the joys of the Blyth Spartans game to help continue the Anchors’ good run of form: “I’m full of confidence to be honest after that. It’s a massive three points here and it was really really tough. The last few games we’ve had to grind out a win. We’re pushing for the playoffs and we all believe we can get there but we have to take each game as it comes.”
