MATCH REPORT

Stockton Town FC v Workington

Stockton Town made it six wins on the bounce with another five-star performance against Workington under the lights.

Two goals apiece for Stephen Thompson and Josh Scott added to a second goal in as many games from Mikey Roberts to solidify another incredible three points.

Michael Dunwell named an unchanged side for the third game in a row, utilising the momentum flowing in the squad.

The visitors had a big chance to open the scoring four minutes into the game when they were unleashed in-behind the defence, but they fired their effort into the side-netting.

The Anchors had their own massive opportunity when Adam Nicholson’s poked cross was prodded goalwards by Michael Sweet, but his attempt was blocked and cleared off the line by a Workington defender.

In the 18th minute however, the Anchors found the lead when Cameron Painter’s inch-perfect cross was headed back across goal by Josh Scott and bundled home off the head of a diving Stephen Thompson.

Josh Scott then found himself a goal three minute after picking up the ball on the left-side of the box and his shot found a way past the goalkeeper for this third goal in a yellow shirt.

The Workington goalkeeper quickly made amends, pulling off a magnificent finger-tip save to deny Michael Sweet from close range.

But Mikey Roberts added a third goal five minutes before the break, running onto a loose ball outside the box, driving towards goal and firing an unsaveable half-volley into the far corner.

Half-time: Stockton Town 3-0 Workington

Three minutes after the restart, Stephen Thompson found his second goal of the evening in typical Stephen Thompson fashion. After being allowed space on the edge of the area, he set up his shot and drilled a low strike perfectly into the bottom left corner.

Substitute Michael Fowler had a great chance to add a fifth goal in the 60th minute after some brilliant individual work on the right-wing to help him drive into box, but his eventual left-footed strike was too high.

Young substitutes Thomas Birtles and Jacob Johnson both had good chances at goal, with Birtles having a shot very well blocked and Johnson slicing a good opportunity wide.

But Stockton put the icing on the cake in the 88th minute when a quick breakaway unleashed Michael Fowler, whose initial effort was very well saved by the leg of Alex Mitchell, but Josh Scott was on hand to fire home the rebound.

Full-time: Stockton Town 5-0 Workington

Michael Dunwell’s side now sit fourth in the standings with 25 points to their name, as a break from the league awaits when Newton Aycliffe make the short journey to Teesside in the Isuzu FA Trophy on Saturday afternoon.
