Stockton Town begin their latest FA Trophy campaign when they travel to Warrington Rylands in the Third Qualifying Round.
This is the Anchors sixth FA Trophy and in each of the previous two seasons they have at least reached the First Round.
The hope will be to emulate the Trophy run of two seasons ago when Michael Dunwell’s side went on to beat Oldham Athletic before falling to a narrow penalty shootout defeat to Rochdale- two sides who now compete back in the EFL.
It is a tricky assignment however with a return to Warrington Rylands just two weeks after the 1-1 draw in the league in which Stockton were held in the second half by a ten-man Rylands.
Since that meeting the Anchors recorded only their second win of the season with a thumping 5-2 victory over Bamber Bridge last Saturday.
Late in the game they lost Aaron Brown to injury and had to play the remainder with just ten men. In Brown’s absence, Stockton will be boosted by the return of other defenders in Ryan Barrett and Owen Gallacher.
Warrington Rylands put up a spirited display against National League North Chorley in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round but ultimately fell to defeat due to a retaken penalty.
Looking ahead to another meeting with Rylands, Michael Dunwell said: “We look forward to going to Warrington. We know what they are about and they know what we’re about. We’ll have players coming back and we are full of confidence.”
Reflecting on last week’s cruel FA Cup defeat, Rylands manager Neil Reynolds cast his eye ahead to another visit from Stockton: “We have to get ready for Stockton here, which is going to be a really tough game, you saw that when they came here last week. I couldn’t believe it when we drew them in the Trophy.
“But I said to the group: we beat a National League team like Fylde 2-0, and then we played Chorley. Now it’s Stockton. If we can perform like that against National League sides and keep our standards that high, we’ve got to grab that momentum and kick on.”
