Stockton Town will look to build on their first win of the season when they make the trip to Guiseley on Tuesday night.
The Anchors tasted victory for the first time this season on Saturday as their first open-play goals of the season from Stephen Thompson and Josh Scott propelled them to a 2-0 triumph over recently relegated Alfreton Town.
Stockton looked fluent going forward throughout and it was a performance which could have produced more goals, as Michael Dunwell said in his post-match interview: “All round today the play was really good, we created many chances and probably could have had a few more to be honest.”
One of the stars from the win was new addition Layton Watts. He thrived through the middle as the number 10. Unfortunately he will be missing for the trip to Guiseley to serve his suspension for his straight red card at Gainsborough Trinity last Tuesday.
A trip to Nethermoor is one of the most challenging in the league. Ian Richards has made a strong start following his first pre-season at the helm. The former Stocksbridge boss is no stranger to Stockton having faced the Anchors from the dugout on six different occasions including a Play-Off Semi-Final epic which was won on penalties by the Anchors.
He was appointed as Guiseley boss last October and he steered them from relegation trouble to the safety of midtable. Stockton faced them at Nethermoor and were held to a 1-1 draw, as they had been the previous season.
In the summer he has bolstered his squad with experience added in midfield in Adam Lund from Alfreton Town where he racked up over 250 appearances in the league above. In attack with the return of Aaron Martin for his second spell, and winger Cam Wilson who shone with 26 goals for Matlock Town in the NPL East Division.
Already those additions have made a difference with the Lions currently sat in 6th place. They are targeting their third-straight win after overcoming Bury and Curzon Ashton in the past week. Both were come-from-behind victories with the former being most impressive as they came back from two goals down to win 3-2 in stoppage time.
Looking ahead to the challenge of Guiseley, Dunwell said: “We look to Tuesday in a very difficult game at Guiseley who have started the season really well and they had another good win today. It’s not going to be easy, they have made some really big signings.”
