Ladies set for League Opener

Stockton Town Ladies begin their league campaign on Sunday when they host Darlington Spraire Ladies- 2pm Kick-Off.

The Anchoresses began their season almost two weeks ago with a 2-0 win at Redcar Town for their first-ever triumph in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

In their last league campaign, Stockton finished 5th out of 11 teams- a firm mid table finish which was creditable for a debut season. They also boasted the league’s second top scorer in Talia Korucu who struck 28 times- just two short of the league’s top scorer in Gateshead Rutherford’s Melissa Scott who scored 30.

“The Ladies worked hard throughout Pre-Season to get prepared for a tough season and are confident following a good set of Pre-Season fixtures and a win in the FA Cup in our first competitive match of the season,” Manager Chris Murphy said.

This Sunday they welcome a Spraire Ladies team who gained promotion from the Durham FA Women’s League Two by winning the title. The Spraire Ladies won 13 of their 16 matches and suffered a solitary defeat- a 4-2 loss at Darlington Railway Athletic.

They have already lost this season as they went down 6-2 at home in their season opener to Hebburn Town.

“Darlington Spraire Ladies will be full of confidence after gaining promotion to League One as part of a treble winning team last season, “ Murphy said.

“They have some talented players in their squad which will no doubt cause us problems and we have to deal with.”

Since their FA Cup victory at Redcar Town, the Anchoresses have had their squad bolstered with more additional signings.

Striker Emma Farrow, Goalkeeper Holly Stainforth and Lily-Ann Thwaite have all been brought in and could be in line to make their debuts.

The game is a 2pm Kick-Off on Sunday 15th September and it is FREE entry. The Ladies would really appreciate the support.
