Stockton Town began October with a harsh defeat at Hyde United.
Hyde opened the scoring at end of the half through Tom Walker before Josh Scott levelled from the penalty spot on the hour mark.
Hyde went back in front when Brad Roscoe scored what proved to be the winner.
The Anchors were aiming to put points on the board for the third straight league game. Michael Dunwell made two changes from the FA Trophy exit with Jacob Watson and Owen Gallacher brought in to play on the left side.
Hyde almost went ahead inside the opening two minutes when Nathan Harker turned over a header from Roscoe.
At the other end, Adam Nicholson also went close when he nodded wide from a corner at the backpost.
It was Tom Coulthard’s turn next to go close when he misfired over from another corner.
Shortly after the half hour mark Jordan Eastham was forced into a save when Stephen Thompson twisted and turned before it arrived on goal.
Despite Stockton’s possession in Hyde’s half, it was the home side who struck the opener right on half time. A swift and devastating break was finished off by a composed Walker.
Half Time: Hyde United 1-0 Stockton Town
Stockton looked to react to the deficit. Jake Petitjean drove forward before he sent an effort narrowly over the bar.
The Anchors had the chance to draw level when they were awarded a penalty after Petitjean was felled when he burst into the box. The referee had initially pointed for a freekick but following a deliberation with his linesman he pointed to the spot.
Scott took responsibility and he sent it down the middle to level the score.
Hyde regained the lead when Dan Gardner’s freekick came all through for Roscoe to nod home.
The Tigers almost extended their lead on the break through Dontai Gabidon but his low effort struck the outside of the post.
In pursuit of a point Dunwell made changes as he brought on Frank Nouble, Callum Young and Michael Sweet.
It was the latter who came the closest with two headers. First he headed wide from Scott’s cross from the right, and later he forced an excellent save from Eastham with another close range header.
Full-Time: Hyde United 2-1 Stockton Town
A frustrating afternoon for the Anchors who did more than enough to get a result. It’s a return to action on Tuesday night with the visit of former EFL club Bury.
