Kevin Hayes has had his say following Stockton Town’s 6-0 victory over Workington on Tuesday.
The tricky winger registered a goal and two assists to open his 2025/26 season.
‘King Kev’ opened by assessing the team performance from the evening: “It was a very good game all around. We started very well, and we were very quick out of the blocks which we discussed was crucial beforehand. Obviously I am buzzing with my own performance, but really unfortunate with what happened with Gally [Owen Gallacher], as well.
That meant I had to move over the left side even though I was happier on the right, but I think it all worked well for me all game given that.”
Hayes followed by comparing the high-intensity of the game to that of the goalless draw at Prescot on Saturday, stating: “I think Saturday there was a lack of chances mainly down to first-game nerves. The pitch wasn’t ideal, but we knew at home we are always able to get the ball on the floor and play quick football and that’s what we did and it definitely could have been a higher tally today.”
The winger then took the time to credit the ever-present supporters, who made their presence known all evening: “They make a massive difference, we spoke before the game on making sure we get the crowd pumped up early and that’s exactly what we did. The crowd helps massively, especially when we play as good we did, it gets us those goals.”
The long-term Anchor found the scoresheet following a very rare header, powered perfectly past the goalkeeper, which he jokes about by saying: “I definitely wasn’t expecting it to go in, but there was plenty of crosses finding their way to the back post, and I seemed to always be a little bit late to arrive, so I changed things up to make sure I was in those areas and it certainly wasn’t how I expected to get a goal from that situation, but very happy I managed it.”
He closes by looking forward to Saturday’s test against Hyde United at the MAP Group UK Stadium: “We’re all feeling very positive about it. Everyone is on a high in there after that result and if we take that performance into Saturday then we can hope for more of the same.”
