500 up for Captain Adam Nicholson

Captain Adam Nicholson marks a significant milestone during this Saturday’s game against Pontefract Collieries as he clocks up his 500th appearance.

Following Tuesday’s postponement at Newton Aycliffe on Tuesday the skipper now has the opportunity to reach the historic feat in front of the home fans.

Nicholson first joined Stockton Town as a seven-year-old when he followed his brother James into the team. At that time he lined up for a team known as ‘Hartburn Tigers’.

Although he played a lot of junior football at Norton & Stockton Ancients under his future manager Gary Hinchley. He would later feature for Stockton and made his debut for the men’s first team in 2009 against Acklam Steel Works.

In 2013 he was part of the team that won the Wearside League title for the first time. They would go on to win that title in four successive seasons before promotion to the Northern League in 2016.

The 2014-15 season proved to be a particularly fruitful season as the Anchors swept all Wearside League honours.

Led by Adam as captain, Stockton took to the Northern League with ease and won the Division Two title in their debut season. They then went onto to reach the Wembley for the FA Vase Final in their debut season at Step Five.

Following a strong performance over the two Covid seasons, Stockton were promoted to Step Four and they made the Play-Off Final in their debut season before falling to Marske United.

Last season they repeated the same feat before losing out to Long Eaton United on penalties.

This season they are currently the league leaders and face a huge test this Saturday against Play-Off chasers Pontefract.

As of now Nicholson has recorded 499 appearances and 114 goals. He is very much a symbol of Stockton Town.

Still only 31 there’s many more memories to be made with Nicholson as Captain of the club.

Club Chairman Martin Hillerby paid his own tribute to Adam, “Never did I think all those years ago when I started my journey with the Club that a young lad playing in my son’s team would become such an integral and inspirational part of the Club and what it has achieved. Let’s be in no doubt that without Adam this Club would not have reached the heights it has. The young players and young people of Stockton should look at Adam and aspire to be not only the dedicated player he is but also the person he has become, as the leader of our Club. On behalf of everyone involved with Stockton Town and its supporters, thank you Adam.”

Fans are encouraged to stay behind following the conclusion of Saturday’s game to help us mark the occasion.

There will be presentation at around 5.15pm in the hospitality suite to mark the occasion followed by a further presentation in the clubhouse at around 6pm.
