MATCH REPORT

Whitehaven v Stockton Town FC

Stockton made the long trip to Whitehaven, looking for a first win on Cumbrian soil having had no luck at Windscale and Cleator Moor on the last 6 visits to Cumbria.

But match number 7 at a different ground, Stockton raced to a 5-0 win at Whitehaven.

Kallum Hannah had the ball in the net after 21 minutes, but the assistants flag was up for offside.

Hannah was determined to get on the score sheet after 23 minutes as he raced one on one with the Whitehaven keeper Ian Studdholme, he tried to knock the striker off his feet, but Hannah still had a shot on goal that went wide, the referee pulled play back for the foul on Hannah by the keeper and awarded a penalty that Hannah duly dispatched sending the keeper the wrong way.

Whitehaven almost got themselves back into the game after 25 minutes, Kevin Connelly sent a header against the bar from a Connor Hammell free kick.

Back came Stockton with a fine solo goal from Chris Stockton after 29 minutes he raced down the wing and with none of his team mates close enough to pass to twisted his way through two defenders before firing past Studdholme, a truly wonderful individual goal and a contender for goal of the Season.

Chris Stockton again got the better of two defenders after 33 minutes but this time he had Macaulay Langstaff to pass to and the young striker fired a strong shot past Studdholme for number 3.

Whitehaven had a couple of late first half chances to reduce the arrears when Hammell found Connelly who fired over the bar after 40 minutes and Craig Quayle fired wide after 43 minutes.

Stockton were now in the driving seat and should have scored again after 50 minutes Hannah’s shot was to powerful for the keeper to hold onto but the ball didn’t fall kindly to Macca Langstaff and the keeper was able to smother the ball.

After a late scare when Connelly put the ball past Arthur after 80 minutes and Tom Coulthard slid in to get a foot to the ball to stop it going in to send the ball up onto the bar and get the ball clear.

But two late goals gave the score a more realistic look as Stockton dominated most of this end to end encounter.

Kallum Hannah sent a fierce shot that flew past Studdholme after 83 minutes.

There was still time for substitute Matthew Garbutt to get in on the act, Chris Stockton who had been a thorn in the side of the Whitehaven defence all of the match, found Garbutt who turned the ball into the net after 89 minutes to round off a fine all round team performance.

Matty Garbutt grabbed Stockton Town's 5th against Whitehaven.

That 5-0 win gave Stockton our 11th double of the season,  Kallum Hannah moves to joint top Scorer with Kevin Connelly on 47 goals only 1 behind his 48 he scored last season.

With 27 clean sheets this season, we are now unbeaten in 46 league games, only 1 defeat in 48 league games and we have scored in the last 78 league games, what a record for Michael Dunwell’s side.
