Captain’s goal secures win at Prescot

Adam Nicholson’s scored another important goal as Stockton edged a tight affair at Prescot Cables.

The skipper headed in Lewis King’s free kick shortly after half time.

It’s a result that means the Anchors need a solitary point to ensure their Play-Off place.

Michael Dunwell named an unchanged side from last week’s emphatic win over Worksop.

They faced a stern test against a Prescot team which had just secured safety and boasted one of the best home records.

Stockton were under pressure from the get go as Nathan Harker was forced into a save to deny Kyle Sambor from point-blank after five minutes.

The remainder of the first was quiet in terms of chances.

Josh Scott had quick feet in the box but his effort at goal was comfortable for the goalkeeper.

Fenton John had a volley on goal which was ballooned over the crossbar.

For Prescot, Alex McNally blazed his header over the bar after he met a cross from the right.

Half-Time: Prescot Cables 0-0 Stockton Town

Stockton made the perfect start to the second when King’s freekick was met by Nicholson who escaped the Prescot defence to head beyond the goalkeeper for the opener.

Prescot almost answered back with a deft header on goal but Harker clawed it over with a decisive hand.

Another chance fell to Cables Captain James Foley who blazed his volley over the bar.

Prescot continued to put pressure on the Anchors rearguard but they stood firm to test. Every ball forward was met by the head of a man in white and red.

In the dying Prescot tried to create a chance from the right but Foley’s low ball across was gathered by Harker before could fall for substitute Ben Elliott.

It’s a fifth win and a fifth clean sheet in a row for the Anchors. Next up a home game against Morpeth Town as they look to secure their Play-Off place.
